Brač – A Health Tourism Centre on Vidova Gora (Vidova Mountain)

Vidova Mountain, situated on the central Dalmatian island of Brač, has the highest peak among the Adriatic islands, with its 778 meters of height. The mountain boasts the largest black pine forest on the Mediterranan and because of the mixing of the mountain and the sea air Vidova Gora is famous for its natural medicinal qualities. This was also recognized by a Swiss company which has decided to build a health tourism centre worth around 300 million euros on Vidova Gora. The centre should become the first oasis with year round tourism on the island of Brač. The building plans encompass four clinics, an 850 bed hotel, a high category villa, wellness and shopping centres, more sports and hospitality facilities, as well as a heliodrome.

Vidova Gora was named after the church of St. Vid, which was once located at the top of the mountain but lies in ruins today. Since the ancient times, the locals of Brač have connected this mountain to the ancient Slavic god Svevid. Many fantastical stories have been told about it.

A unique view stretches towards the south from the top of Vidova Gora. Deep down at its foot is the wine growing, green plain of Bol with the famous, pebbly beach Zlatni Rat, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. During the winter, Vidova Gora is often under a white blanket of snow, so if the roads are accessible, it becomes a winter resort.

The island of Brač was most probably named after a deer, a legendary animal of the Ilirian tribes which it was inhabited by called brentos. The Greeks called it Elaphusa and Bretanide, from the word elaphos – deer.
